The Wanderers: (Batohiya), is a compilation of poems of two Trinidadian-born brothers, Satnarine and Lal Balkaransingh, third generation of Indian indentured immigrants. The writings collectively span a period of approximately sixty years (1961 to 2021). They, however, carry a memory of over ninety years; three generations of Indo-Trinidadian society and history and its changing ethics, values, religious beliefs and spirituality; documenting an emergent cultural ethos. The first segment of the anthology, by Satnarine, written over a thirty-three year period (1988-2021), reflects a history and cultural value system that speaks of the present but influenced by the past. It captures a range of intense emotional experiences – the patriotic, romantic, nature lover, artistic, philosophic and mystical leanings.
The second segment, penned by Lal over a thirty-year period (1961-1991), is a meandering, poetic journey of several aspects of his life; his childhood memories, his love for nature, for the mother figure, as well as his romantic, patriotic and philosophic leanings. The anthology provides glimpses of the personal, historical, allegorical and metaphysical dimensions, even futuristic thoughts on life.
