Race and Politics in a Divided Nation

In this book, Professor Deosaran has put together his perceptive essays on race and politics and related issues that had appeared in the Sunday column of Newsday, a national newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago during 2010-2020. These essays are about the people, the events, and the ideas that were talked about there in that period. They vary in their size, but they are uniformly incisive in their reflections and candid in their expression. Some essays are stand-alone, but others want you to look for more; there are always leads which one could follow on the Internet these days. What is usually published in newspapers is ephemeral and dispersed; but when a scholar’s musings on a subject are put together in a well-organized volume, they have lasting value. This work confirms Deosaran as a public intellectual; it appears to be the culmination of his public responsibility as a veteran academic.
