This collection of essay represents all the linguistic areas of the Caribbean. It includes analyses of the range of territories from Suriname to Cuba. This collaborative effort bears witness to what C.L.R.James has called- the birth of a caribbean nation.

"The essays here develop important themes. Several of them explicitly pose the need for revolutionary change in the region and explore the class/race forces in the conjuncture of the 1970's. They compel us to look deeper within for descriptive validity, conceptual clarity and theoretical adequacy; and they lead us backwards and forwards in time and outwards in space. They will generate, and contribute to, future discussion and debate".

SUSAN CRAIG is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. Her publications include articles on community development and labour movements in the Caribbean. She is currently preparing a study of the social history of Trinidad and Tobago since the 1930's.
