Charles Le Cadre
Charles Le Carde, French creole reprobate, was the product of his generic inheritance and consequent mental-make up, of his upbringing and education and, perhaps most importantly, of his environment - of the Trinidad society of his time.
This book is basically a psychological study of Charles, in which the reader is invited to decipher the puzzle of his character. Autobiographies and letters intended only for the eyes of the recipients or close friends are used to give an astonishing insight into the life of a nineteenth century French Creole family. No other family in Trinidad's history is as well documented, so that for any historian who pretends to know about the French creoles in Trinidad, this book provides necessary reading.
The information about the family has been integrated into a detailed background of Trinidad at tht time. It embraces the gamut of human emotions, from romance to tragedy, from despair to resurrection. It is illustrated by potraits of the family dating back to the eighteenth century and more general illustrations of Trinidad.
